A female elephant valued at Rs 40 lakh was stolen from Jharkhand and later recovered in Bihar after being sold for Rs 27 lakh.
Authorities in Medininagar, Jharkhand, announced on Tuesday that a stolen female elephant named 'Jayamati' has been successfully rescued from Bihar's Chapra district following an inter-state police operation.
The elephant's owner, Narendra Kumar Shukla from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, had reported the theft on September 12 after the animal disappeared from the Chukur area in Jharkhand's Palamu district. Shukla had previously purchased the elephant from Ranchi for Rs 40 lakh.
SDPO Manibhushan Prasad of Medininagar explained that after registering the theft case at Sadar police station, investigators received crucial information on Monday about the elephant's location in Pahadpur, Bihar's Chapra district. The Jharkhand police coordinated with Bihar authorities to facilitate the recovery operation.
The investigation remains active, with law enforcement still searching for the suspects involved in the theft and illegal sale of the elephant. No arrests have been made in the case yet.
