Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has committed to recommending a CBI investigation into the alleged paper leak scandal that has sparked protests among youth across the state.
On Monday, Dhami personally visited protesting students at Dehradun's Parade Ground who have been demonstrating against irregularities in a recent graduate level examination conducted by the Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission.
During his interaction with the protesters, Dhami acknowledged that while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) under a retired High Court judge's supervision had already begun investigating the allegations, he would recommend a CBI probe to address students' persistent demands.
"We will not obstruct this matter in any way. The government does not want to leave any doubts or suspicions in the minds of youth," Dhami stated firmly.
The Chief Minister emphasized his administration's dedication to ensuring complete transparency in examination processes. He highlighted previous measures taken during the past four years, including implementing India's strictest anti-cheating legislation and apprehending approximately one hundred individuals involved in examination fraud.
Dhami pointed out that his government has successfully conducted over 25,000 transparent government recruitments during the last four years without complaints. The current allegations relate to just one specific examination.
"The government is absolutely committed to eliminating all doubts from young people's minds," he assured the protesters.
After listening to their grievances, Dhami expressed regret that students were protesting outdoors during harsh weather and festival season. He mentioned that while they could have met at his office, he chose to visit the protest site personally after witnessing their difficulties.
Just a day earlier, Dhami had indicated his openness to any required investigation, including by the CBI, but suggested allowing the SIT to complete its investigation first.
In a gesture of goodwill, the Chief Minister also promised that any cases filed against protesting students during the demonstrations would be withdrawn.
