Banking institutions across India follow different holiday schedules according to regional festivals and celebrations.
During the period spanning late September to early October 2025, banks in India will observe multiple holidays coinciding with major festivals including Navratri, Durga Puja, and Gandhi Jayanti. The State Bank of India and other banking institutions adhere to the holiday schedule prescribed by the Reserve Bank of India. These scheduled closures encompass national holidays, regional festivals, every second and fourth Saturday, and all Sundays. Due to India's cultural diversity, bank holidays vary significantly across different states.
According to RBI guidelines, September 29 has been designated as a bank holiday in Agartala, Kolkata, and Guwahati to observe Maha Saptami, which marks the seventh day of Durga Puja celebrations.
Bank Holiday Schedule (September 29-October 5):
September 30: Banking operations will be suspended in multiple cities including Agartala, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Imphal, Jaipur, Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi in observance of Maha Ashtami/Durga Ashtami, which represents the eighth day of Durga Puja and Navratri festivities.
October 1: Banks will remain closed across several states including Tripura, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Nagaland, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Meghalaya, and Kerala for celebrations of Dussehra, Ayudha Pooja, and Durga Puja.
October 2: Banking institutions nationwide will observe a holiday for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, Dasara, Vijaya Dashami, Dussehra, Durga Puja, and Janmotsav of Sri Sri Sankardeva.
October 3-4: Banks in Sikkim will remain closed for Durga Puja (Dasain) celebrations.
October 5: All banking institutions across India will be closed for the regular Sunday holiday.
Impact on Banking Services:
While physical branch closures may result in payment processing delays and certain inconveniences, digital banking services will remain fully operational throughout the holiday period. These electronic channels ensure continuity of essential banking functions even when branches are closed. Customers can access various services through:
- Online and mobile banking platforms for conducting transactions, checking balances, and making bill payments
- NEFT and RTGS electronic fund transfer services
- ATM facilities for cash withdrawals and card-based transactions
- Online portals for requesting chequebooks, demand drafts, and other account-related services
