Passengers wait at a platform after train services were disrupted due to rainfall in South 24 Parganas
The Durga Puja celebrations might be affected by rainfall as meteorologists predict a new low pressure area forming over the Bay of Bengal on October 1. This weather system is expected to bring precipitation across numerous regions during the next week, with heavy downpours possible in isolated areas of south Bengal districts, according to the IMD's Saturday announcement.
The five-day Durga Puja festival begins on September 28 and ends on October 2, known as 'Vijaya Dashami.' In many locations, however, idol immersion ceremonies take place at later dates.
The current depression is expected to continue moving across south Odisha and Chhattisgarh, gradually weakening into a well-marked low pressure area by Sunday.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the emerging low pressure system will likely cause light to moderate rainfall across most of south Bengal, with intense precipitation possible in specific locations within Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts.
The IMD forecasts that Kolkata will experience heavy rainfall on October 1, while various districts in the southern region of the state will face similar conditions over the next two days.
With sea conditions expected to be rough during this period, the IMD has cautioned fishermen against venturing into waters along the West Bengal-Odisha coastline.
