Shillong:
Eight ministers out of the total 12 in the Meghalaya cabinet have tendered their resignations ahead of a scheduled cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday, according to officials. Notable resignees include senior leaders AL Hek, Paul Lyngdoh, and Ampareen Lyngdoh.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who leads the NPP-headed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, personally presented the ministers' resignations to Governor C H Vijayashankar at Raj Bhavan, officials confirmed.
The swearing-in ceremony for new cabinet members is set to take place at Raj Bhavan at 5 pm on Tuesday, an official stated.
"The eight ministers who have stepped down include NPP's Ampareen Lyngdoh, Comingone Ymbon, Rakkam A Sangma and Abu Taher Mondal, UDP's Paul Lyngdoh and Kyrmen Shylla, HSPDP's Shakliar Warjri, and BJP's AL Hek," another official reported.
As per constitutional provisions, Meghalaya, which has a 60-member legislative assembly, cannot have more than 12 ministers including the Chief Minister.
Ampareen Lyngdoh previously handled the agriculture and law portfolios, while Ymbon and Rakkam A Sangma were responsible for cooperation and education respectively.
Mondal served as power minister, Paul Lyngdoh oversaw tourism, and Kyrmen Shylla managed revenue and disaster management.
Shakliar Warjri was in charge of sports, while AL Hek headed animal husbandry.
The resignations have created openings for new ministerial appointments, officials explained.
According to party sources, National People's Party (NPP) legislators Wailadmiki Shylla, Sosthenes Sohtun, Brening A Sangma and Timothy D Shira are expected to join the cabinet.
United Democratic Party (UDP) president Metbah Lyngdoh and former minister Lahkmen Rymbui are likely to be appointed as well, the sources indicated.
Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) legislator Methodius Dkhar is set to replace Shakliar Warjri, while BJP's Sanbor Shullai will take AL Hek's position in the cabinet, the sources added.
