The incident has raised significant concerns regarding the increasing problem of stray dogs in residential neighborhoods.
A young girl suffered injuries after being attacked by a group of stray dogs while playing in a lane located in Pune's Vadgaonsheri area.
CCTV footage captured the frightening moment when two girls were playing together before being suddenly approached by four stray dogs. While one girl managed to escape, the other was caught by the dogs, dragged for some distance, and sustained injuries during the attack.
Fortunately, two bystanders quickly rushed to the scene and successfully rescued the girl from the aggressive dogs. The injured child is currently receiving medical treatment.
This incident has heightened concerns about the growing threat posed by stray dogs in residential communities.
In a similar incident last month, four-year-old Sharvil Lonara was attacked by 20-25 dogs in Maharashtra's Bhandara district. The young boy was saved when local residents intervened and successfully chased the dogs away.
In another recent case, a man dramatically escaped an attack by seven stray dogs in Maharashtra's Pimpri Chinchwad last month. The entire incident was captured by CCTV cameras. The nearly three-minute video showed the man walking through a dark alley when seven stray dogs suddenly charged toward him and attacked. The dogs appeared to be attempting to bite him. The man jumped behind a parked motorcycle for protection. When the dogs continued their aggression, he pushed the bike toward them. No dogs were harmed during this defensive action.
Within minutes, nearby residents emerged from their homes and helped drive the dogs away. However, the animals returned to the spot shortly afterward. This time, the man, who remained standing by the roadside, defended himself using a wooden board. The dogs eventually fled the scene.
These consecutive incidents have intensified the nationwide debate regarding the increasing frequency of stray dog attacks. On August 11, the Supreme Court ruled that all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR and surrounding regions must be relocated from residential areas to shelters due to the rising cases of dog bites. Animal welfare advocates protested against this decision and organized large demonstrations across the country.
Subsequently, the Supreme Court modified its original order, instructing that the animals be returned to their original locations after undergoing sterilization and immunization procedures.
The court also directed municipal authorities to establish dedicated feeding areas where people can feed stray dogs, emphasizing that public feeding would not be permitted elsewhere - and violations would result in strict enforcement action.
