Mumbai:
Mumbai police dismantled a fraudulent call center operation in the western suburbs and detained 13 individuals allegedly involved in swindling American citizens by offering fake anti-virus software renewal services for their computers, an official announced on Tuesday.
Officials from the crime branch conducted a raid at premises located in Vihan Commercial Complex in Goregaon East on Monday evening and apprehended the suspects, the official stated.
According to the official, the crime branch had received specific intelligence regarding a call center where employees were sending emails to US citizens about anti-virus software renewals, along with providing a toll-free contact number.
"When victims called the toll-free number, the perpetrators would pressure them into purchasing gift cards valued between $250 and $500. The accused would subsequently convert these payments into cryptocurrency," explained the official.
The illegitimate call center had been operating continuously for approximately two years, he added.
Authorities have arrested two owners of the call center, both described as highly educated individuals, along with one manager and ten call center agents, the official reported, noting that the raid operation continued throughout Monday night.
The official mentioned that the accused have been charged under applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Information Technology Act, and Telecommunication Act, and a local court has placed them in police custody for further investigation.
