Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has launched a scathing critique against private healthcare institutions, condemning what he terms as "greedy doctors" for the state's exceptionally high caesarean section (C-section) delivery rates.
During his address to the state Assembly, Naidu described this trend as "dangerous" and unnecessary, particularly in cases where natural childbirth remains a feasible and healthier alternative.
The Chief Minister's stern comments follow recent statistics indicating that Andhra Pradesh has emerged as one of the nation's leaders in C-section procedures, with an alarming 56.62% of all births in the state now occurring through surgical intervention.
Naidu pointed out that private medical facilities bear responsibility for an overwhelming majority of these operations, with approximately 90% of all C-sections being performed in these establishments.

"They are scheduling muhurats (auspicious times) and then conducting the deliveries. That is wrong," Naidu declared, suggesting that many surgical deliveries are being arranged for convenience or superstitious beliefs rather than genuine medical indications. He stressed that surgical procedures should not be performed on the human body unless absolutely necessary.
The Chief Minister additionally disclosed that a substantial portion of the state's health initiative, Dr. NTR Vaidya Seva Trust, is being consumed by C-section procedures, depleting public resources.
Naidu has instructed health minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav to tackle this issue directly. The administration intends to collaborate with private hospitals to ensure that surgical births are only conducted when medically warranted and to encourage natural deliveries.
The administration aims to transform the state's maternal healthcare framework and combat what it perceives as profit-motivated over-medicalization of the childbirth process.
