In Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra, a 73-year-old Congress leader who shared a morphed image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media faced an unusual public humiliation. Prakash "Mama" Pagare found himself forcibly dressed in a red saree by local BJP workers who were angered by his social media activity.
The incident escalated when BJP members, including Kalyan unit president Nandu Parab, confronted Mr. Pagare in a public space. The confrontation was recorded on video, which later circulated on social media platforms, showing Mr. Pagare protesting, "What are you doing?" as BJP supporters wrapped the saree around him.
Before departing, the BJP workers issued a stern warning to Mr. Pagare against posting similar content in the future. They also broadly cautioned that anyone engaging in comparable behavior would receive similar treatment.
Mr. Pagare later explained to media representatives, "I had forwarded an existing post on Facebook." He described receiving a call from BJP leader Sandeep Mali while he was at the hospital. "As I was leaving the hospital, Sandeep Mali, accompanied by several people, seized me and questioned me about a Facebook post I had shared, then threatened me," Mr. Pagare recounted.
He emphasized, "I told them their actions were inappropriate. A case should be filed against these BJP workers. I intend to pursue legal action against them under the Atrocities Act."
Local BJP leader Narendra Sharma defended the action, stating, "The way Congress leader Prakash Pagare insulted PM Modi will not be tolerated. If such behavior is repeated, our workers will respond in the same manner as today."
