Prime Minister Modi concluded his significant two-day diplomatic mission to Ethiopia on Wednesday before departing for Oman on the final segment of his three-nation tour.
In a remarkable display of personal diplomacy, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali personally drove PM Modi to the airport in his own vehicle and remained present to bid farewell as the Indian leader boarded his flight for Oman. This gesture mirrored his warm welcome when PM Abiy had similarly driven Modi from the airport upon his arrival in Ethiopia on Tuesday.
Earlier that day, both leaders participated in the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam Initiative' by planting a sapling together in Addis Ababa, symbolizing the growing bilateral relationship between the nations.
During his visit, PM Modi addressed the Joint Session of the Ethiopian Parliament, highlighting cultural connections between the two ancient civilizations. He drew meaningful parallels between India's 'Vande Mataram' and Ethiopia's national anthem 'March Forward, Dear Mother Ethiopia,' noting that both nations refer to their homeland as "mother" – reflecting shared cultural perspectives.
Before departing, PM Modi expressed on social media platform X: "It was a great honour and privilege to address the Ethiopian Parliament this morning. Ethiopia's rich history, culture and spirit inspire deep respect and admiration. I conveyed India's commitment to further strengthening our partnership, guided by shared values, mutual trust and a common vision for peace, development and cooperation."
In his parliamentary address, the Indian Prime Minister connected India's governance philosophy of "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayaas" (together with everyone's growth, trust and effort) to the shared emotional bond both nations have with their motherlands.
PM Modi referenced scientific discoveries in Ethiopia, mentioning "Lucy of Dinkinesh" fossils as evidence of shared human origins. He related this to the Indian principle of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (The world is one family), stating: "If our beginning was shared, then our destiny must also be shared."
The diplomatic visit included PM Modi laying a wreath at the Adwa Victory Monument and touring the Adwa Museum, where he received briefings on Ethiopian history. A significant highlight was Modi receiving Ethiopia's highest civilian honor, the 'Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia,' for which he expressed profound gratitude to the country's government and citizens.
The Indian Prime Minister had arrived in Ethiopia on Tuesday to enthusiastic welcome ceremonies, marking an important chapter in India-Ethiopia diplomatic relations.
