The government has emphasized that border fencing continues to be a crucial element in its comprehensive strategy to prevent infiltration.
In efforts to bolster security and combat unauthorized entry, India has constructed physical fencing along more than 93 percent of the India-Pakistan International Border and approximately 79 percent of the India-Bangladesh border, according to information provided by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
MHA statistics shared by Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai reveal that fencing has been completed across 2,135.136 kilometers, representing 93.25 percent of the total 2,289.66 kilometer India-Pakistan International Border. The remaining 154.524 kilometers, equating to 6.75 percent, still awaits fencing.
The data further indicates that the India-Bangladesh International Border, which spans 4,096.70 kilometers, has fencing installed along 3,239.92 kilometers, covering 79.08 percent of the boundary. An unfenced portion of 856.778 kilometers, or 20.92 percent, remains.
Additionally, the report noted advancements along the India-Myanmar border, which extends 1,643 kilometers in total. "Physical fencing has been completed along 9.214 kilometers of this border so far," the report stated.
The government has reaffirmed that border fencing remains an essential component of its initiatives to reduce infiltration and strengthen national security.
Rai was responding to questions raised by two Trinamool Congress MPs—Jagdish Chandra Barma Basunia and Sharmila Sarkar—regarding the unfenced border areas (measured in kilometers and as a percentage of the total border).
In total, India maintains a land border spanning 15,106.7 kilometers and a coastline extending 7,516.6 kilometers, inclusive of island territories.
India shares land borders with seven neighboring countries. To the west, India has an extensive land border with Pakistan that traverses through Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat, including the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir.
In the northern and northeastern regions, India shares a substantial and sensitive border with China across Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, delineated by the Line of Actual Control. India also maintains an open and amicable border with Nepal through Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim, permitting free movement of people. Eastward, India borders Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.
Bhutan shares a peaceful and strategic boundary with India through Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh, while Bangladesh shares India's longest land border, connecting with West Bengal and the northeastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Mizoram. Myanmar is situated further east and shares borders with Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram. India also maintains a brief border with Afghanistan in the northwest via the Wakhan Corridor region.
Beyond land borders, India has maritime boundaries with Sri Lanka, separated by the Palk Strait, and with the Maldives, positioned to the southwest in the Arabian Sea.
