Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced a compensation of Rs 3 lakh for the family of a deceased student.
In a tragic incident in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district, a Class 7 student lost his life when a wall suddenly collapsed at a government school. Another student sustained injuries in the accident.
The collapse occurred while students were seated outside their classrooms during midday meal time. According to Tiruvallur District Collector Pratap who spoke to NDTV, preliminary investigations revealed that four students were eating when the compound wall unexpectedly gave way. While one student died and another was injured, two others escaped unharmed.
The Collector further mentioned that Public Works Department officials would conduct a thorough assessment of the building's structural integrity to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his condolences and announced financial support of Rs 3 lakh for the bereaved family.
The incident has sparked criticism from opposition parties, who blame the DMK government for inadequate maintenance of educational infrastructure. AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami described the death as "tragic" and "avoidable" in an official statement.
Palaniswami suggested that funds used for government promotional events could have been better utilized for maintaining school buildings, potentially preventing this tragedy. He called on the Chief Minister to conduct safety audits of government school buildings throughout Tamil Nadu.
BJP State President Nayinar Nagendhran criticized the incident as evidence of administrative failure under Chief Minister Stalin's leadership.
Officials have confirmed that an investigation is in progress and a case has been registered regarding the incident.
