Amman:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Amman on Monday, marking the first leg of his three-nation trip designed to strengthen international relationships. During his arrival, the Prime Minister expressed confidence that this visit would enhance bilateral connections between India and Jordan.

In a display of the close diplomatic ties between the two nations, Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan personally welcomed PM Modi at the airport with a ceremonial reception.

"Landed in Amman. Thankful to Mr. Jafar Hassan, Prime Minister of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, for the warm welcome at the airport," PM Modi shared on social media, adding, "I am sure this visit will boost bilateral linkages between our nations."

This comprehensive bilateral visit to Jordan is historically significant, occurring after 37 years and coinciding with the 75th anniversary of established diplomatic relations between the countries.

Jordan represents the initial stage of PM Modi's four-day diplomatic journey that will subsequently include Ethiopia and Oman.

The Jordanian Prime Minister remarked on social media: "It is an honour to welcome Prime Minister @narendramodi of the Republic of India to Jordan today, as a valued guest, in a visit that reflects seventy-five years of close and enduring relations." He further expressed anticipation for "broader horizons of cooperation between our two countries, particularly in the economic, investment, and technological fields."

Upon reaching his hotel, PM Modi received a warm reception from the Indian community and friends of India residing in Jordan. He greeted them and conveyed wishes from friends and families in India. The welcome featured local artists performing traditional Indian dances, showcasing India's rich cultural heritage.

"Deeply touched by the warm welcome extended by the Indian community in Amman. Their affection, pride in India's progress and strong cultural bonds reflect the enduring connection between India and its diaspora. Also grateful for the role the diaspora continues to play in strengthening India-Jordan relations," PM Modi posted on X.

The Prime Minister's schedule includes a one-on-one meeting with King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, followed by delegation-level discussions.

On Tuesday, both leaders will address an India-Jordan business event attended by prominent business representatives from both nations.

Weather permitting, the Prime Minister and the Crown Prince plan to visit Petra, the historic city with ancient trade connections to India.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, this represents Prime Minister Modi's first full-fledged bilateral visit to Jordan.

Previously, PM Modi had transited through Jordan in February 2018 en route to Palestine.

The MEA noted at a special briefing in New Delhi last week that "Even though it was a transit visit, exceptional courtesies" were extended to him by His Majesty the King, elevating it beyond a mere transit visit. They emphasized that "the current full bilateral visit (by an Indian prime minister) is taking place after an interval of 37 years."

India and Jordan maintain strong economic relations, with India serving as Jordan's third-largest trading partner. The bilateral trade between the countries is valued at USD 2.8 billion.

Jordan is also a key supplier of fertilizers to India, particularly phosphates and potash.

The Arab nation hosts a vibrant Indian diaspora of over 17,500 people employed across various sectors including textiles, construction, and manufacturing.
