Bodies Of 7 Workers Killed In Arunachal Accident Recovered After 4 Days

Guwahati:

After four days of intensive search operations, the bodies of seven workers who perished in a road accident in Arunachal Pradesh on Monday have been recovered. Six of these bodies will be transported back to their homes in Tinsukia district. The tragic incident is feared to have claimed the lives of at least 21 workers from Tinsukia. According to police reports, 22 individuals, including the driver, were traveling in a minitruck that plunged into a deep gorge on the Hayuliang-Chaglagam road in Anjaw district.

Nang Chingni Choupoo, the District Disaster Management Officer (DDMO) for Anjaw, stated, "Today (Saturday) marks the third day of rescue operations, and the joint rescue team has initiated efforts to retrieve the bodies using all possible means. On Friday, search operations at the site were suspended after recovering six bodies due to darkness, with the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) team returning to their night halt location at Metengliang." Choupoo confirmed that the seventh worker's body was recovered on Saturday.

Choupoo explained that during the rescue operation, the NDRF team transported the bodies back to the base utilizing technical rope rescue methods. "The bodies were handed over to civil police in the presence of district authorities and representatives from the Tinsukia district administration," she added.

The DDMO emphasized the challenging nature of the rescue operation, noting that the difficult terrain has significantly slowed the team's progress.

She further reported that one additional worker's body was recovered on Saturday. The accident site is approximately 60 km from Hayuliang towards Chaglagam, located in a deep gorge that has made access and retrieval operations extremely challenging.

According to officials, Monday's accident remained undiscovered until Wednesday when the sole survivor, Budheswor Deep, managed to climb up to a nearby army camp and alert them about the tragedy. Deep is currently receiving treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.

Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal visited Budheswor at AMCH on Friday to inquire about his health condition.
