Kolhapuri Chappals Can Hit $1 Billion Exports After Prada Deal: Piyush Goyal

A significant partnership between luxury brand Prada and traditional Kolhapuri Chappal manufacturers has been officially announced following earlier controversies.

Union Minister for Commerce and Industries Piyush Goyal expressed enthusiasm after meeting with Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, highlighting that this collaboration could potentially elevate Kolhapuri chappals to achieve $1 billion in exports.

"I was delighted to learn about the collaboration between Prada and our Kolhapuri chappal artisans. For years, I've wondered why these beautifully crafted footwear pieces with intricate designs, vibrant colors, exceptional comfort, and distinctive presentation haven't yet become globally recognized," Goyal remarked.

The minister shared his satisfaction that Prada has recognized the value of this traditional Indian craft, stating, "I'm pleased that Prada has embraced this opportunity. We can now introduce the Kolhapuri brand and designs to international markets. I've always envisioned Kolhapuri chappals reaching ₹1 billion in exports from India, and I encourage both parties to collaborate toward this ambitious goal."

Goyal emphasized the addictive comfort of Kolhapuri footwear, noting that "once you experience wearing Kolhapuri chappals, you won't desire anything else." He mentioned his personal connection, having worn them throughout his childhood.

Speaking alongside the Italian Deputy Prime Minister, Goyal expressed confidence in the partnership between India and Italy with a prestigious brand like Prada, stating that "our craftsmen, artisans, and leather workers will collaborate effectively to create a truly global brand and offering."

As previously reported by NDTV, a specialized team from the luxury fashion house has arrived in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, to begin foundational work for the collaboration with local artisans.

The visiting delegation, consisting of Prada's technical experts, is evaluating the traditional manufacturing process of Kolhapuri chappals. They have engaged in discussions with artisans, cooperative leaders, and stakeholders to gain deeper insights into this traditional craft.

Earlier this year, Prada generated controversy by launching Kolhapuri-inspired sandals priced at approximately Rs 1.2 lakh. These luxury items, influenced by Maharashtra's traditional handcrafted footwear, faced criticism for their premium pricing and perceived lack of acknowledgment toward the original craftspeople.
