2 Killed, 12 Injured In Indore Building Collapse, Residents Blame Rats

Two people lost their lives and 12 others suffered injuries when a multi-story building unexpectedly collapsed in Indore, Madhya Pradesh on Monday.

Officials reported that the building housed four families at the time of the disaster.

Tragedy struck in Indore, Madhya Pradesh on Monday when a multi-story residential building suddenly gave way, claiming the lives of two individuals and leaving at least 12 others injured, including a three-month-old infant girl.

The deceased were identified as Alfia and Faheem, whose bodies were extracted from the debris following extensive rescue operations. Four of the wounded are currently in critical condition and receiving medical care at MY Hospital.

According to authorities, four families were residing in the structure. When the collapse occurred, 14 people were present inside, while other residents had gone to visit relatives.

Initial investigations indicate that the building, estimated to be between 10-15 years old, had developed structural cracks due to persistent heavy rainfall.

Residents reported that water frequently accumulated in the basement, weakening the foundation. Some occupants also claimed that nearby hotels and rodent infestations further compromised the building's structural integrity.

Collector Shivam Verma and Police Commissioner Santosh Kumar Singh were among the high-ranking officials who immediately visited the scene following the incident. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava and BJP MLA Golu Shukla also arrived to monitor relief efforts.

The electricity department suspended power supply in the vicinity to prevent accidents during rescue operations.

Ward Councillor Ansaf Ansari emphasized that this incident underscores the dangers posed by weakened foundations and unregulated construction in the older parts of the city.

The district administration has mandated inspections of nearby deteriorating buildings to avoid similar disasters in the future.

This collapse has raised critical concerns regarding structural safety standards, illegal construction practices, and administrative oversight in Indore, one of the fastest-developing cities in Madhya Pradesh.
