AIADMK Leadership Crisis: NDA Seeks Return of OPS and Dhinakaran Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections

As the AIADMK prepares for a pivotal Executive Committee meeting Wednesday, speculation intensifies regarding the potential return of expelled leaders O Panneerselvam (OPS) and TTV Dhinakaran to the NDA coalition. This development could substantially bolster the NDA's position in Tamil Nadu before the 2016 Assembly elections.

Both prominent figures recently departed from the NDA, initially viewed as a significant setback for the BJP-led alliance in Tamil Nadu. Their possible reintegration indicates a strategic shift by the BJP, which aims to unify anti-DMK votes and maintain solidarity within the politically influential Thevar community across southern Tamil Nadu.

TTV Dhinakaran has been transparent about his intentions, consistently expressing his goal to "reclaim the AIADMK" from current leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS). Dhinakaran repeatedly characterizes EPS as a "betrayer" for allegedly acting against his aunt, VK Sasikala, and removing her from the party during her imprisonment. He frequently references how Sasikala had selected EPS as Chief Minister following Jayalalithaa's death, challenging EPS's credibility as the party's legitimate leader.

AIADMK sources reveal that EPS previously firmly resisted incorporating OPS and Dhinakaran into the NDA. However, senior BJP leadership has been encouraging EPS to reconsider his position to maintain alliance stability.

"The strategy is straightforward - prevent fragmentation of traditional AIADMK supporters and consolidate backing from the Thevar community," explained a senior political strategist. "The BJP believes that bringing OPS and Dhinakaran under the NDA framework, even if not directly reintegrating them into AIADMK, will project a unified front."

Recent political movements suggest preparations are underway. OPS's unexpected Delhi visit and Dhinakaran's discussions with BJP leaders in Coimbatore have reportedly facilitated these developments.

A senior AIADMK representative informed NDTV, "The General Council may indirectly address this matter. The underlying motivations are evident." Regarding seat distribution, the official clarified, "The BJP would allocate them under their seat quota."

The AIADMK has suffered defeats in three consecutive elections, including two contested alongside the BJP. Prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, EPS terminated ties with the BJP, only to renew the partnership recently due to changing electoral necessities.

As the party works toward rebuilding, EPS is reportedly contemplating a significant resolution at the upcoming meeting. Sources suggest the AIADMK might authorize him to make independent decisions regarding alliances and government formation should the party secure a majority. This initiative aims to protect the AIADMK's distinct identity within the NDA structure - a concern repeatedly emphasized by EPS.

"EPS has consistently maintained that the AIADMK will prevail through its own strength and establish its own government," noted a party insider.

Despite these strategic adjustments, the NDA continues to face multiple challenges in Tamil Nadu. The PMK experiences deep division between founder Dr S Ramadoss and his son Anbumani Ramadoss, with their internal conflict creating uncertainty about the party's ultimate position. Additionally, DMDK leader Premalatha Vijayakanth has yet to confirm whether her party will join the coalition.

Tamil Nadu's political landscape is realigning once again, raising questions about whether the BJP's strategy to reunite former rivals under the broader NDA umbrella will create stability or generate new tensions. Attention now focuses on E Palaniswami, who must balance political pragmatism with demonstrating effective leadership by securing victory in the upcoming election.
