Kolkata:
A disturbing echo of the Robinson Street incident has emerged in Kolkata. This time, a daughter and her mother were discovered living in a locked room with the decomposed body of their father and husband, according to police on Tuesday.
This shocking discovery occurred in the Bosepukur area of Kabsa in south Kolkata. Following concerns raised by neighbors, police recovered the deceased's body from the family residence on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Sumit Sen (64). His body has been sent for autopsy to determine the cause and time of death. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident. Initial findings suggest that all three family members had been suffering from long-term mental health issues.
Local sources report that Sumit resided with his wife Archana Sen and daughter Sampriti Sen on the first floor of their Bosepukur home. He was a former employee of a private organization. Since his retirement, neighbors had been helping to care for the family, who rarely ventured outside their home.
Concern grew when none of the family members were seen outside for three days, with the house door remaining locked. Suspicious locals contacted a relative of the Sen family living in the Kasba area. When the relative called Sampriti to check on the family, she repeatedly insisted that her parents were fine. However, suspicions intensified when the parents themselves would not come to the phone despite requests.
On Monday, relatives and neighbors visited Sumit's residence but found the door locked from inside. After repeated knocking with no response, they alerted the Kasba police station.
A senior Kolkata Police officer reported, "Our officers forced entry into the home and discovered the man's body in an advanced state of decomposition. The daughter and wife were sitting beside the body. A strong odor was emanating from the residence. We have recovered the body for autopsy and are thoroughly investigating this matter." The officer added that the exact cause and timing of death would be confirmed once autopsy results are available.
This incident recalls the notorious Robinson Street case from 2015 that shocked Kolkata. In that case, police discovered the skeleton of a woman that had been kept in a home for months after recovering a burned body of an elderly man from the same residence.
Partha Dey, who suffered from mental illness, had been maintaining his sister's skeleton. The burned body belonged to his father. Partha later committed suicide in 2017.
Similar disturbing incidents have been reported across Kolkata neighborhoods including Kasba, Garfa, Netaji Nagar, and Salt Lake over the years, as well as in other locations such as Murshidabad, Howrah, Barasat, and Memari.
