Trinamool MP Mimics PM Modi in Parliament While Criticizing Voter List Revision Process

Kalyan Banerjee, Trinamool MP, mimicked Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a parliamentary discussion on electoral reforms, criticizing the government's claims about infiltrators in Bihar and questioning the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision process that he claims is designed to delete voters rather than authenticate them. Banerjee argued that removing voters from electoral rolls undermines democratic principles and criticized digital verification methods for determining family relationships.

On Infiltrators In Voters' List Charge, Trinamool MP Mimics PM Modi, Jabs Centre

Trinamool MP Kalyan Banerjee, known for his imitations of other politicians, mimicked Prime Minister Narendra Modi today during a Lok Sabha discussion focused on electoral reforms.

"You spoke extensively about infiltrators in Bihar. You claimed you would expel all infiltrators. Modiji stated that SIR was implemented in Bihar to remove infiltrators. However, not a single infiltrator was identified there. You have failed to fulfill your responsibilities. BSF couldn't detect foreigners, nor could CISF. The responsibility lies with the home minister and the prime minister," the Trinamool MP said, imitating PM Modi's Bihar speech manner.

Kalyan Banerjee claimed that the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls conducted by the Election Commission is designed to "delete" voters rather than authenticate them, describing the process as arbitrary.

"Why should someone whose name appeared in the 2024 voter list be told they're not eligible because their name wasn't present in 2002?" he questioned, arguing that removing voters undermines democratic principles.

"What purpose does an election serve if you remove voters," the Trinamool MP asked, adding, "Now, Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi determines through the Election Commission who qualifies as a voter."

Emphasizing that "nobody is above the law," Banerjee stated that the Supreme Court would ultimately decide on the legality of the EC's actions.

The MP also criticized the election authority's approach to delimitation and its use of digital applications for verifying family relationships in voter lists.

He contended that the law doesn't define 'relative' in the strict manner being applied.

"If parents' names aren't included, they won't be recognized as relatives. Should an app determine who qualifies as my relative? Is my brother not my relative? Is my wife not my relative?" he questioned, calling the process arbitrary.

The four-time MP from Serampore in West Bengal argued that the system should promote inclusion, but "SIR is solely intended to delete electors."
