Malayalam director and former MLA PT Kunju Muhammed faces serious allegations of indecent behavior toward a colleague during last month's International Film Festival of Kerala-2025 (IFFK) screening, prompting police to register a formal case.
According to the complainant's statement, Muhammed, who was serving as jury chairman, allegedly entered her room and assaulted her. She specifically mentioned in her complaint that he had "insulted her femininity" and "behaved badly" toward her.
The woman, who was serving as a jury member responsible for film selection for the upcoming festival scheduled to begin this week, filed her complaint directly with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, as reported by IANS. The complaint was subsequently transferred to the Thiruvananthapuram City Police Commissioner for investigation.
Muhammed has categorically denied all allegations, suggesting there must have been a "misunderstanding." He defended his reputation stating, "I have been in the public sphere for 25 years and not behaved badly with anyone."
The accused is a notable figure in Kerala politics, having served as a two-time legislator who won as an independent candidate with Communist Party of India (Marxist) support. His political career began when he won the 1994 by-election from Kerala's Guruvayoor constituency, successfully retaining the seat in the 1996 Assembly elections.
Beyond politics, Muhammed is also recognized as a founder-director of the CPI(M)-backed Kairali TV channel. His professional background includes working abroad for a decade as a senior executive with an international French company after completing his education.
Muhammed's film career began as a producer with the 1978 film 'Aswathama,' followed by his acting debut in 'Uppu.' He later produced two more critically acclaimed films, 'Purushartham' and 'Swaroopam,' both of which received recognition at state and national levels.
As a director, he has created several notable works including 'Magrib' and 'Garshome,' which have earned prestigious awards in the film industry.
