The Assam government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, distributed scooters to 11,250 high-achieving students on Monday as part of the Dr Bani Kanta Kakati Merit Award Scheme. This distribution takes place just months before the upcoming state elections.
According to the latest guidelines revised in December, students who achieved 80 percent or higher marks in the 2025 Higher Secondary (HS) Examination qualified for this reward.
During the ceremony, Chief Minister Sarma formally presented the scooters to recipients while emphasizing the government's dedication to promoting academic excellence among students.
The Chief Minister shared on social media platform X: "Giving wings to the dreams of our young ones. Dr Banikanta Kakati Merit Award started off as a reward for good results but has now transformed into a catalyst of academic excellence and growth for Assam's brightest minds."
Chief Minister Sarma explained, "We initiated this scheme to provide scooters to students achieving specific academic benchmarks in the Higher Secondary examination. While eligibility criteria were initially broader, this year we established the cutoff at 80% due to the introduction of another educational program."
He further added, "Distributed scooters to 11,250 bright students today, which will motivate them to continue their track record of good academic performance and encourage others to give their best shot and make themselves and their parents proud."
