Rajya Sabha MP and philanthropist Sudha Murty was targeted by a fraudulent call, where the caller warned her that her mobile device was being used to access inappropriate content.
The caller, who falsely identified as a representative from the Union Ministry of Telecommunications, claimed her mobile number had improper registration. During the September 5 conversation, the individual threatened to disconnect her mobile service by midday unless she followed instructions, and attempted to solicit personal information from her.
A Truecaller search of the number showed it labeled as "Telecom Department."

Following the incident, Ms. Murty reported the matter to police authorities, which led to the filing of an FIR and subsequent investigation.
This case emerges amid other cyber fraud incidents, including one involving the wife of former minister and current BJP MP from Chikkaballapur K Sudhakar, who lost Rs 14 lakh to cybercriminals. The Cyber Crime, Economic Offences and Narcotics (CEN) police quickly intervened, freezing and retrieving the fraudulently transferred funds.
In another recent incident, actor-director Upendra and his wife Priyanka Upendra experienced phone hacking. The perpetrators sent messages to their contacts requesting UPI transfers of 55,000 with promises of quick repayment.
Ms. Priyanka had received a deceptive message stating an order couldn't be delivered due to complications, directing her to call a number containing unusual symbols. Both she and Upendra attempted calls from their devices, which subsequently became compromised. Following this, Mr. Upendra used social media to caution people against responding to such fraudulent communications.
