New Delhi:

The Supreme Court recently expressed strong disapproval regarding a woman's demand for Rs 5 crore in alimony for dissolving a marriage that lasted merely one year and two months.

The bench led by Justice JB Pardiwalla cautioned the woman that continuing with her Rs 5 crore alimony request could result in a "very harsh order" against her.

According to case details, the husband, an Amazon engineer, had proposed a settlement of Rs 35 lakhs, but his wife reportedly demanded Rs 5 crore instead.

The woman's attorney contested the husband's representation, claiming that the requested amount had already been reduced from Rs 5 crore during mediation proceedings.

While addressing the husband's legal representative, Justice Pardiwala remarked, "You will be making a blunder by calling her back. You won't be able to keep her. Her dreams are very big."

The court deemed the Rs 5 crore demand unreasonable and warned that maintaining such a position could lead to unfavorable rulings.

These observations were made last Thursday during a marriage dissolution hearing.

The bench ultimately instructed the estranged couple to return to the Supreme Court mediation center for further settlement discussions, advising the wife against persisting with her Rs 5 crore alimony request.

"We direct the parties to go back to the Supreme Court mediation center for the purpose of settlement," the court ordered.

"We are informed that the wife demanded a sum of rupees 5 crore for the purpose of dissolution of the marriage. The marital life between the parties is just about one year," Justice Pardiwala stated.

"If such is going to be the stance of the wife, we may have to pass some orders which she may not like. Right? We expect the wife to put forward reasonable demands and put an end to this litigation," Justice Pardiwala further added.

The Supreme Court has directed both parties to appear before the Supreme Court mediation center on October 5.

The matter will be revisited after the submission of the mediation report.
