Mumbai:
Maharashtra's Fisheries and Ports Development Minister Nitesh Rane proposed on Monday the inclusion of shrimp or fish in school mid-day meals, highlighting their nutritional value as protein sources and suggesting this could boost domestic consumption amidst high US tariffs.
Rane expressed his intention to discuss this proposal with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The minister also announced the forthcoming launch of the Chief Minister Matsya Sampada Yojana, along with 26 additional schemes aimed at supporting individuals involved in fisheries and related industries.
"These schemes are designed to address structural gaps in the sector and enhance farmers' income. We have already encouraged people to consume more shrimp, which provides excellent protein," Rane explained.
The BJP minister revealed he had conducted extensive consultations with industry stakeholders to identify challenges facing the fisheries sector.
"I engaged with senior officials and fisheries stakeholders to understand their practical difficulties and explore how the state government can streamline processes, enabling them to expand their businesses with minimal obstacles," he elaborated.
When questioned about the high tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian shrimp, the minister advocated for increasing local consumption of these marine products.
"We've already encouraged people to consume more locally produced shrimp. Additionally, I would like to discuss with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis the possibility of including shrimp in students' mid-day meals in government and government-aided schools. Since many schools already provide eggs as protein sources, why not consider adding fish or shrimp?" he questioned.
