IndiGo experienced an unprecedented disruption by cancelling more than 550 flights on Thursday, marking the highest number in the airline's 20-year history.
New Delhi witnessed the third consecutive day of operational challenges as India's largest carrier struggled with multiple issues affecting its services.
The airline faces significant operational difficulties stemming from cabin crew problems and technological complications. In response, IndiGo has modified its schedules, implementing pre-planned cancellations to help normalize operations.
According to company statements, passengers should expect additional flight cancellations over the next two to three days. While IndiGo typically operates approximately 2,300 flights daily and prides itself on punctuality, its on-time performance plummeted to just 19.7 percent on Wednesday, dropping further from Tuesday's already low 35 percent.
Senior officials from the Civil Aviation Ministry and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) held meetings with IndiGo leadership today to address the situation and develop remedial strategies.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers communicated to staff that restoring normal operations and improving punctuality would present significant challenges.
The disruption has affected airports nationwide, with Mumbai reporting at least 118 cancelled flights, Bangalore 100, Hyderabad 75, Kolkata 35, Chennai 26, and Goa 11, according to PTI. Numerous other airports also experienced cancellations.
The airline acknowledged its miscalculation of crew requirements under new regulations, resulting in planning gaps and insufficient crew availability. These issues were compounded by winter weather conditions and airport congestion.
Temporary relief measures include rolling back the revised definition of night duty (previously extended from midnight-5am to midnight-6am) and temporarily suspending the two-flight cap on night landings.
In discussions with the DGCA, IndiGo attributed the disruptions to transitional challenges in implementing Phase 2 of the revised Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) regulations, which took effect on November 1 following court directives. The airline admitted that the actual pilot requirements for complying with FDTL Phase 2 exceeded their forecasts.
Data presented by IndiGo revealed that after implementing Phase 2, required staffing levels increased significantly, particularly for night operations where slot availability is limited and pilot duty time restrictions are more stringent.
The new regulations, designed to enhance fatigue management and pilot safety, have fundamentally altered crew scheduling patterns across the airline's operations.
