Businessman Amitabh Jain was fatally injured in a hit-and-run incident in Gurugram's DLF Phase 2
Gurugram:
A 58-year-old businessman from Gurugram has succumbed to injuries sustained in a hit-and-run incident that occurred in DLF Phase 2 on Wednesday. Amitabh Jain was cycling during the morning hours when a Hyundai Santro struck him from behind. Following the collision, which left Jain critically injured, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene immediately.
The entire incident was captured by surveillance cameras in the vicinity. The CCTV footage shows Jain cycling at approximately 7:15 am on Wednesday. He was properly positioned in the left lane when the Santro approached from behind. Notably, the road appeared largely vacant at the time, raising questions about why the driver failed to simply overtake the cyclist.
Authorities registered a police case shortly after the accident occurred. With Jain's subsequent death, additional charges are expected to be filed against the perpetrator.
Police officials have revealed that the CCTV footage enabled them to identify the vehicle's registration number. This information has been used to determine the car owner's identity, and efforts to locate this individual are currently underway. When officers visited the address listed in the registration records, neither the vehicle nor its owner were present. A comprehensive search operation has now been launched to locate the vehicle.
Investigators are also exploring the possibility that this was not a random hit-and-run but potentially a premeditated attack stemming from personal enmity with the businessman.
Cyclists, along with pedestrians and motorcyclists, represent one of the most vulnerable road user groups. Most Indian urban centers, including Delhi, lack dedicated protected cycling infrastructure. According to official government statistics, more than 4,000 cyclists lost their lives in road accidents during 2022 and 2023.
