A 19-year-old engineering student tragically took his own life in Hyderabad following a dispute with friends over splitting the cost of a party bill, according to police reports released Monday.
The young man, originally from Adilabad district, was found deceased in his private hostel room at Narapally on Sunday evening after apparently hanging himself.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from an argument that occurred when a group of friends attended a party at a bar. The disagreement over how to divide the bill escalated into a physical altercation.
Reports indicate the student was also allegedly physically assaulted by some local individuals.
In a video reportedly recorded before his death, the student claimed that certain individuals demanded money from him and made threats. He stated he had been humiliated and physically attacked. According to his testimony, he was taken to a bar, forced to consume alcohol, and compelled to pay a bill amounting to Rs 10,000.
Following a complaint filed by the student's father, authorities have registered a case that includes charges of abetment of suicide and extortion under the BNS, as well as relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The investigation remains ongoing.
