Lubna and Mohammad Imran, both from the Juhi locality in Kanpur, were married on November 29.
A newlywed woman was expelled from her husband's residence in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh after refusing to request her parents provide either a motorcycle or Rs 2 lakh as dowry. Their marriage collapsed within 24 hours, with the groom's family allegedly making dowry demands immediately after the bride arrived at her in-laws' home.
Lubna and Mohammad Imran, both residents of Juhi in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, were wed on November 29 according to Muslim traditions. Lubna arrived at her in-laws' residence the following day, full of hope for her new life, with henna - a traditional marriage symbol - still fresh on her hands. She had no idea she was entering not a welcoming home but rather a situation driven by greed.
Upon Lubna's arrival, her in-laws surrounded her, not to welcome her into the family but to demand money for a specific motorcycle - a Royal Enfield Bullet. The extended family reportedly accused Lubna of not bringing any gifts for her husband, Imran.
"An argument began shortly after I arrived. They told me that since I hadn't provided a bullet bike, I should return home and bring Rs 2 lakh," Lubna explained.
Lubna further alleged that her in-laws confiscated the jewelry she was wearing and the cash her family had provided.
"They began physically assaulting me and forced me out of the house, demanding I bring money," Lubna claimed.
Recounting the evening her daughter returned home, Mehtab said, "Around 7:30 pm, Lubna appeared at our door. When I asked about her unexpected visit, she broke down crying and described her ordeal."
The family states they spent lakhs on their daughter's wedding. According to the list of gifts Imran's family received from Lubna's family, they were given a sofa set, television, washing machine, dressing table, water cooler, dinner sets, clothes, and kitchen items made of both steel and brass, among other things.
"They never requested a motorcycle before the wedding. Had they made this demand earlier, we might have reconsidered the marriage," said Mehtab, Lubna's mother.
Mehtab claims the family did everything possible to ensure their daughter's marriage and provide for her. Now, they seek justice and reimbursement for their wedding expenses.
A case has been filed against Imran and his family, and investigations are ongoing.
