Kanpur:
A 30-year-old constable assigned to UP-112 was discovered hanging in his rented residence in Kanpur on Tuesday, according to officials.
The deceased, identified as Maan Mahendra, shared the accommodation with his wife Kavita (26) and their two children, Tejas (5) and Deepanshu (3), in a four-storey building located in Shyamajipuram area of Kalyanpur.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Dinesh Tripathi reported that Mahendra had been residing alone since November 26, when his wife departed for her parents' home in Mathura with their children.
Authorities found no suicide note in the residence, and the motivation behind the tragic action remains undetermined, added the DCP.
The discovery occurred when police sub-inspector Itendra Kumar, stationed at Kalyanpur police station and residing on the second floor of the same building, visited Mahendra's room to retrieve his helmet. After receiving no response to repeated knocking, Kumar peered through the window and reportedly saw Mahendra suspended from the ceiling. Police were immediately notified and forced entry to recover the body.
Family members informed investigators they had not communicated with Mahendra since November 27. His wife stated she had no awareness of any distress during their final conversation.
A troubling development emerged when officials learned the constable had uploaded a video to social media approximately 13 hours prior to his death, according to an official speaking anonymously.
In the alleged video, Mahendra stated, "Ruthba toh marne ke baad bhi rahega... log paidal chalenge, hum kandhon par. Dekhna, jab main marunga na, toh hanste hue marunga. Kyunki jeete ji main roya bahut hoon." (My dignity will remain even after death... people will walk on foot, but I will be carried on shoulders... Watch, when I die, I will die smiling, because I have cried too much while living.) The recording suggests profound emotional distress, though officials have not confirmed any specific motive.
Mahendra, originally from Madhaira village in Govardhan (Mathura), joined the UP Police in July 2018. He was assigned to the PRV attached to Kidwai Nagar police station after transferring from Rawatpur station in June 2021.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kalyanpur Ranjit Kumar confirmed an investigation has commenced. "The cause of suicide remains unestablished. Several debit and credit cards were discovered in his pocket. Family members have indicated potential financial debts, but all possibilities are being investigated," he added.
The constable's body has been sent for post-mortem examination, according to police.
