In a remarkable act of quick thinking, a Muslim cleric in Assam utilized a mosque microphone to alert an entire village at dawn, ultimately saving the lives of seven individuals trapped in a sinking vehicle.
The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when the vehicle veered out of control, sliding off the National Highway before plunging into a pond in Assam's Sribhumi district. At the time of the accident, all windows of the vehicle were closed, and most passengers were sleeping as the vehicle began to sink into the water.
"Upon hearing a loud crash outside, Maulana Abdul Basit, who serves as the Imam of the Jama Masjid and teaches at Mirabari Madrasa, immediately accessed the mosque microphone to notify villagers about the emergency situation and called for urgent help," according to a local resident who witnessed the aftermath.
In response to the imam's broadcast alert, community members from the surrounding neighborhood rushed to the accident site within minutes. They quickly organized and executed a rescue operation, successfully retrieving all seven passengers from the sinking vehicle.
