Tesla's Slow Start in India: 157 Units Sold as Company Opens First All-in-One Centre in Gurugram

The American electric vehicle manufacturer has introduced its Model Y electric SUV as its inaugural product in the Indian market.

Tesla's highly anticipated debut in India's rapidly expanding luxury electric vehicle market has started rather cautiously, with the company recording sales of just 157 units since beginning deliveries in September.
Data from the government's Vahan portal reveals that Tesla delivered only 48 vehicles in November, falling behind established luxury competitors such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
For perspective, BMW India sold 267 electric vehicles in November alone, illustrating the intense competition Tesla encounters in the premium segment.
The American automaker launched operations in India with its Model Y electric SUV as the company's first offering in the country.
Despite initial enthusiasm, the sales figures indicate that Tesla still has considerable ground to cover before it can effectively challenge the market position of well-established luxury automotive brands.
While sales are gradually increasing, Tesla is continuing to strengthen its presence in India. The company recently unveiled its first comprehensive Tesla Centre in Gurugram last week.
Located at Orchid Business Park in Sector 48, this new facility integrates retail, after-sales service, delivery operations, and charging infrastructure in a single location, providing customers with a complete ownership experience.
Sharad Agarwal, General Manager of Tesla India, described the Gurugram centre as a significant advancement in supporting the expanding Tesla community across northern India.
He further explained that the company aims to enhance electric mobility convenience by developing infrastructure around people's everyday activities - near their workplaces, dining establishments, and travel routes.
Agarwal emphasized that Tesla's mission focuses on accelerating the transition to sustainable energy. The company intends to boost customer confidence and promote wider adoption of electric vehicles in India by enhancing charging infrastructure and implementing a direct business model.
Visitors to the newly opened Gurugram centre can examine the latest Tesla technologies, participate in test drives of the Model Y, and access the advanced V4 Superchargers installed at the location.
Tesla's humanoid robot, Optimus Gen 2, is also exhibited at the centre, demonstrating the company's advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics.
