A nursing student in Telangana's Warangal district became the victim of a chemical attack, sustaining superficial burns on her left leg and waist.
In Hyderabad, authorities are investigating an incident where three masked individuals attacked a nursing student with a corrosive substance in Warangal district's Kazipet Mandal area on Monday evening. The victim, who originates from Jangaon district, is currently receiving treatment at MGM Hospital where medical professionals are optimistic about her recovery.
The attack occurred as the woman was traveling by two-wheeler to her grandmother's residence after leaving her college in Hanamkonda. According to initial reports, three masked individuals on another two-wheeler intercepted her path, threw the chemical substance at her, and quickly fled the scene.
Hospital staff confirmed that while the victim sustained superficial burns to her left leg and waist, her condition remains stable as she undergoes treatment.
Law enforcement has registered a case against the unknown assailants and launched a comprehensive investigation. NDTV was informed by police sources that several teams have been deployed to locate the suspects, who were wearing helmets to conceal their identities during the attack.
Investigators have not yet determined the motivation behind the attack but are exploring possible angles including personal enmity or stalking.
This incident has sparked renewed concerns regarding female student safety in the Warangal-Hanamkonda urban region.
The attack evokes memories of a notorious 2008 acid attack case in which two female engineering students were targeted by stalkers after rejecting their advances. One student died three weeks later, triggering massive public protests.
The perpetrators of the 2008 case were later killed in a police "encounter" led by then-Warangal Superintendent of Police, VC Sajjanar—an event that became a significant moment in the region's approach to violent crimes against women.
Kazipet police are facing substantial pressure to act quickly and decisively, assuring the public that all available resources, including CCTV footage, are being utilized to capture the three suspects and restore confidence in student safety.
