Patna:
A joyous wedding celebration in Thanua village within Bihar's Rohtas district turned into a devastating tragedy on Monday morning when celebratory gunfire claimed the life of a bride's family member.
The victim was identified as Nandan Kumar Singh, a schoolteacher from Buxar district who taught at Middle School, Vishrampur in Itahari block. He was the son of Vijay Bahadur Singh.
Nandan had traveled to attend his cousin's wedding ceremony when disaster struck around 1 a.m. Monday. He sustained critical gunshot wounds after being hit by bullets fired by unidentified individuals during the wedding festivities.
Following the shooting, family members rushed Nandan to Narayan Medical College Hospital in Jamuhar. Due to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently transferred to Sasaram Sadar Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries, leaving the entire wedding gathering overcome with grief.
The deceased's cousin, Anupam Kumar Singh, has made serious accusations against local law enforcement.
According to Anupam, instead of immediately pursuing the perpetrators, police detained approximately 10 members of the bride's family at the station for several hours. He alleges that officers confiscated their mobile phones and pressured them to settle the case informally.
"Following the incident, police failed to arrest the responsible parties. Instead, they detained 10 of us at the station, took our mobile phones, and pressured us to manage the situation," stated Anupam Kumar Singh, cousin of the deceased.
These allegations have intensified the family's distress and raised concerns about the initial police response to the tragedy.
Upon receiving notification, a police team from Shivsagar arrived at the location, took custody of the body, and arranged for post-mortem examination. An investigation was launched under Sadar DSP-2 Dilip Kumar's supervision.
Authorities have since apprehended three primary suspects and recovered the pistol allegedly used in the deadly shooting.
Sasaram SDPO Dilip Kumar confirmed: "Three individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. Their associates have been identified, and operations are ongoing to apprehend them. Technical evidence has been collected from the crime scene, and we've recovered the weapon used in the incident. Further action will follow after interrogation."
