In Kanpur, authorities announced on Sunday the arrest of a self-proclaimed 'tantrik' charged with the murder of a 26-year-old man. The killing occurred near a mazar in Shivli following a confrontation over "vashikaran" (mind control) rituals.
The deceased, identified as Rajababu from Arshadpur village, had approached the accused, Neelu, seeking supernatural assistance to reconcile with his former girlfriend who had married another individual in April.
According to Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) Shraddha Narendra Pandey, Rajababu initially paid the tantrik Rs 36,000, followed by an additional Rs 1.5 lakh for the promised mystical services.
On November 24 evening, Neelu summoned Rajababu to his village for what he termed "final rituals." After purchasing alcohol, they proceeded to a nearby field where Neelu conducted a fabricated ceremony and instructed the young man to write a note.
Police reports indicate that a dispute erupted when Neelu demanded additional payment. During this altercation, he allegedly stabbed Rajababu multiple times in the chest, causing immediate fatality. In an apparent attempt to stage a suicide, Neelu positioned the murder weapon in Rajababu's hand and attached a note alongside a photograph of his former girlfriend to the body.
The victim's remains were discovered the following morning on November 25. Investigators traced a liquor package at the crime scene to a local shop, where surveillance footage captured Rajababu with Neelu shortly before the incident occurred.
Although Neelu initially attempted to misdirect the investigation, he subsequently confessed during interrogation after being apprehended by authorities.
The SP confirmed that investigators have secured the murder weapon along with post-mortem reports and CCTV evidence.
"This crime was perpetrated purely for financial gain under the disguise of occult practices," stated Pandey, adding that further legal procedures are currently in progress.
