Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that further investigation will be conducted into singer Zubeen Garg's death after receiving the death certificate, which listed "drowning" as the cause of death.
The renowned singer Zubeen Garg lost his life in a scuba diving accident in Singapore on September 19. His remains were transported to Delhi before being flown to Assam on a commercial flight that arrived in Guwahati on Sunday morning.
In a media statement, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the Singapore High Commission provided Zubeen Garg's death certificate indicating "drowning" as the cause of death. The authorities have requested the commission to supply the post-mortem report of the singer.
"We have received Zubeen Garg's death certificate from the Singapore High Commission stating drowning as the cause of death. However, this is separate from a post-mortem report. The death certificate and post-mortem report are two distinct documents. We will forward these documents to CID. Assam's Chief Secretary is in contact with the Singapore Ambassador to obtain the post-mortem report as quickly as possible," CM Himanta Biswa Sarma explained during his media interaction.
Garg was visiting Singapore for the Northeast India Festival. Following his passing, the event organizers released a statement explaining that Zubeen Garg experienced breathing difficulties while scuba diving.
"CPR was administered immediately before he was rushed to Singapore General Hospital. Despite medical efforts to save his life, he was pronounced deceased in the ICU around 2:30 PM IST," the statement further mentioned.
Regarding the singer's final journey, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the funeral rites will take place at Kamarkuchi village on September 23 at approximately 8 am.
CM Himanta Sarma told reporters, "We will transport Zubeen Garg's mortal remains from Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex at approximately 8 am on September 23 to Kamarkuchi, where the last rites will be performed. A state funeral will be conducted on September 23."
Concerning the funeral arrangements, Himanta Sarma acknowledged Home Minister Amit Shah's support in coordinating the singer's final journey.
"Union Home Minister Amit Shah has contacted me 2-3 times today to inquire about our arrangements for Zubeen Garg's final journey. He offered advice and assured us of his assistance," stated CM Himanta Sarma.
Meanwhile, thousands of grief-stricken fans gathered at Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex today to offer their final respects to Assam's beloved singer Zubeen Garg.
The singer's remains are currently placed at the Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex to allow fans and well-wishers to pay their tributes before his funeral.
