Kyiv:
On Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his warm Independence Day wishes, stating that Ukraine is relying on "India's contribution to ending the war with Russia".
In his social media statement, Zelensky highlighted Ukraine's appreciation for India's commitment to "peace and dialogue".
"As the world collectively works toward ending this terrible war with dignity and sustainable peace, we are counting on India's contribution," Zelensky remarked.
He further stated, "Every diplomatic strengthening decision improves security not only in Europe but also across the Indo-Pacific region and beyond."
Earlier, on August 16, Prime Minister Modi extended wishes to the Ukrainian people for a peaceful and progressive future while thanking Zelensky for his Independence Day greetings.
When wishing India on its August 15 Independence Day, Zelensky had expressed hope that New Delhi would help in efforts to end the conflict with Russia.
Prime Minister Modi responded on X: "Thank you President Zelensky for your warm greetings. I deeply value the joint commitment to forging even closer ties between India and Ukraine. We earnestly wish our friends in Ukraine a future marked by peace, progress and prosperity."
On Tuesday, Zelensky published a letter he received from Prime Minister Modi dated August 24, wherein Modi thanked the Ukrainian president for his "thoughtful message" and "kind wishes" regarding India's Independence Day.
Reflecting on his Kyiv visit last August, PM Modi expressed his desire to strengthen "our mutually beneficial cooperation".
"I also extend my greetings to you and the Ukrainian people on your Independence Day. I fondly remember my visit to Kyiv last August and note the progress in India-Ukraine bilateral relations since then. I look forward to working with you to further enhance our mutually beneficial cooperation," he wrote.
PM Modi emphasized that India has consistently advocated for peace and remains committed to "providing all possible support for sincere efforts seeking an early, lasting and peaceful resolution of the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy".
Zelensky's comments come as the August 27 deadline approaches for the 50 percent "punitive tariffs" imposed by US President Donald Trump on India for purchasing Russian crude oil.
