US Announces 25% Additional Tariffs on Indian Imports Effective August 27
Washington:
The Trump administration has formally notified that supplementary 25 percent tariffs will be imposed on goods imported from India, scheduled to take effect at 12:01 am (EST) on August 27. According to the notice issued by the Department of Homeland Security, these punitive duties are being implemented in response to "threats to the United States by the Government of the Russian Federation," with India being included in this policy action.
"The duties outlined in the Annex to this document will apply to products of India that are entered for consumption, or withdrawn from warehouse for consumption, on or after 12:01 am Eastern Daylight Time on August 27, 2025," the notice stated.
Deteriorating Relations
The relationship between New Delhi and Washington is experiencing a decline after President Donald Trump escalated tariffs on Indian products to a substantial 50 percent, which includes an additional 25 percent duty, citing India's purchases of Russian crude oil.
India's Response
Speaking just two days before the implementation of these punitive tariffs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared on Monday (Aug 26) that India would remain resilient against economic pressure.
"Regardless of the pressure applied, we will continue to build our capacity to withstand it," he stated during a public address in Ahmedabad's Nikol area. The Prime Minister emphasized that his administration is committed to protecting small entrepreneurs, farmers, and livestock rearers from harm.
In what appeared to be an indirect reference to the US tariffs, PM Modi remarked, "Aaj duniya me arthik swarth wali rajniti (hai), sab koi apna karne me lage hain. Usse hum bhali bhanti dekh rahe hain (Today's world is characterized by politics driven by economic self-interest, with everyone prioritizing their own concerns. We are clearly observing this)."
"From Ahmedabad, from Gandhi's homeland, I want to assure you and promise that the interests of small entrepreneurs, shopkeepers, farmers and livestock rearers remain Modi's highest priority... Dabav kitna hi kyun na aaye, hum jhelne ki apni takat badhate jayenge (No matter the intensity of pressure, we will continuously strengthen our ability to endure it)," he added.
