Noida:
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has successfully dismantled an international cyber fraud network that was running an elaborate fake technical support scam targeting individuals in Australia and the United Kingdom.
One individual has been arrested in this operation, which forms part of the agency's continuing Operation Chakra-V initiative.
The criminal network operated through a sophisticated fake call center branded as FirstIdea, established within the Noida Special Economic Zone.
During a strategically timed raid on Monday, CBI officials searched three Noida locations and caught the perpetrators red-handed - ongoing scam calls were intercepted as the operation was timed to coincide with the working hours of victims in target countries.
The fraudsters impersonated technical support representatives from prominent global companies like Microsoft, convincing foreign victims that their devices were compromised or infected. They would subsequently demand payment for resolving fabricated technical issues.
Following reliable intelligence, the CBI filed a case and initiated the operation with collaborative assistance from the FBI (USA), the National Crime Agency (NCA) of the UK, and Microsoft Corporation.
The searches yielded sophisticated calling equipment, malicious software scripts, and documentation revealing the extensive scope of the operation. The syndicate had developed complex systems ensuring anonymity while facilitating large-scale cross-border targeting.
A primary suspect, identified as a partner in the FirstIdea operation, has been arrested and is being presented before the Special CBI Court today, July 8.
The CBI has reaffirmed its dedication to combating cybercrime and emphasized its commitment to international cooperation with law enforcement agencies and technology companies to prosecute such offenders. Through Operation Chakra-V and related initiatives, the Bureau is actively working to disrupt cybercriminal networks operating transnationally.
The arrested individual has been identified as Nishant Walia, a partner in Firstidea.
