Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed his significant two-day visit to Cyprus on Monday before departing for Canada to participate in the 51st G7 Summit scheduled for Tuesday in Kananaskis, Alberta.
The June 15-16 visit marked the first time an Indian Prime Minister had visited Cyprus in more than 20 years, substantially enhancing New Delhi's relationship with Nicosia, which is both a close ally and a key partner in the Mediterranean region and European Union.
"This historic visit highlights the lasting friendship and trusted partnership between our nations. In his media address, Prime Minister Modi outlined the strategic direction of India-Cyprus relations. This partnership is also important within the broader framework of the India-EU strategic partnership and India's increasing engagement with the Mediterranean region," stated Tanmaya Lal, Secretary (West) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as the Prime Minister concluded his visit to Nicosia.
Multiple agreements were formalized between the two nations on Monday, confirming their mutual commitment to deepening bilateral relations and strengthening India's involvement with the Mediterranean region and European Union.
Earlier in the day, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides presented Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the country's prestigious honor - the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III - during a ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.
This award represents the 23rd international recognition bestowed upon PM Modi by a foreign nation. Highlighting his unparalleled global standing, many analysts observed that no previous Indian Prime Minister has achieved such significant international influence as a global statesman.
PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the palace from Christodoulides accompanied by military band honors. Following the playing of both National Anthems, the Indian Prime Minister placed a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III. The leaders then engaged in a private discussion.
In his welcome address, the Republic's President said: "It is our great pleasure and honor to host you on this historic visit, 23 years since an Indian Prime Minister last visited Cyprus.
"Your presence demonstrates the clear political determination to further enhance our bilateral relations across numerous sectors, including economy, trade, defense and security, technology, tourism, and connectivity. Yesterday's business forum revealed strong interest from both Indian and Cypriot business communities."
The Joint Declaration subsequently adopted clearly demonstrated a new chapter in India-Cyprus bilateral relations, with broader implications at European and international levels.
"Cyprus serves as a predictable and reliable ally for India in the strategically significant Eastern Mediterranean and wider Middle East region. As a European Union member state, Cyprus provides India's gateway to Europe, and during Cyprus's upcoming EU Council Presidency beginning January 1, 2026, we will work toward further strengthening India's strategic relations with the EU," Christodoulides stated.
"I also wish to publicly thank you for your consistent position on the Cyprus issue and our efforts to end the Turkish occupation and reunify our homeland. Additionally, I want to publicly express the Republic of Cyprus's support for your efforts in combating both international and cross-border terrorism," he added.
