During his visit, PM Modi received Cyprus' highest civilian honor, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, named after the Republic's first President. This prestigious recognition is bestowed upon heads of state and distinguished individuals for exceptional service to the nation.
In his acceptance speech, PM Modi remarked, "This honour is not just mine, it is the honour of 140 crore Indians... I dedicate this honour to the friendly relations between India and Cyprus and our shared values and mutual understanding."
The Cyprus visit is part of PM Modi's three-nation diplomatic tour, which includes participation in the G7 summit in Canada. This diplomatic engagement carries significant strategic importance for India, particularly considering Pakistan's strengthening relationship with Turkey.
During recent Pakistani aggression toward India following Operation Sindoor, the Pakistani military utilized Turkish drones and missile systems.
Nicosia has previously endorsed India's candidacy for permanent membership in an expanded UN Security Council.
With Cyprus expected to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union next year, the country has emerged as a valuable strategic partner in the Mediterranean region as India works to expand its diplomatic relationships in that area.
