New Delhi:

On Wednesday, India called on Germany to facilitate the prompt return of Indian infant Ariha Shah, who has been under foster care in Berlin for almost four years.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar brought up the matter during discussions with German counterpart Johann Wadephul.

"I raised the issue of Ariha Shah, an Indian child who has been in German authorities' foster care for some time. I emphasized to the Minister that ensuring her cultural rights is essential and that she should grow up in an Indian environment," Jaishankar stated at a joint media conference with Mr Wadephul.

"This matter requires resolution without further delay, and I believe we've had some productive discussions on this topic today," he added.

German authorities assumed custody of Ariha Shah on September 23, 2021, when she was just seven months old, claiming her parents had mistreated her.

India has consistently urged Germany to ensure Ariha's swift return to her homeland.
