Tatiana Schlossberg has undergone extensive treatments including multiple rounds of chemotherapy and two stem cell transplants as part of her cancer battle.
John F Kennedy's granddaughter revealed on Saturday her terminal cancer diagnosis through a poignant essay published in "The New Yorker," sharing that doctors estimate she may have approximately one year left to live. In the same piece, she criticized health policies advocated by her cousin, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr.
Tatiana Schlossberg, daughter of Caroline Kennedy and Edwin Schlossberg, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia featuring a rare mutation typically found in older patients. Her diagnosis came in May 2024 at age 34, following the birth of her second child when doctors noticed an elevated white blood cell count during routine examinations.
Her deeply personal essay was published on the 62nd anniversary of her grandfather's assassination, adding historical weight to her revelation.
Schlossberg, who works as an environmental journalist, detailed her medical journey including multiple chemotherapy treatments, two stem cell transplants (one using cells from her sister and another from an unrelated donor), and participation in clinical trials. During her most recent experimental treatment, her physician candidly told her "he could keep me alive for a year, maybe."
In her essay, Schlossberg expressed concerns about healthcare policies supported by her cousin RFK, suggesting they could harm cancer patients like herself. Her mother, Caroline Kennedy, had previously urged senators to vote against his confirmation.
"As I spent more and more of my life under the care of doctors, nurses, and researchers striving to improve the lives of others, I watched as Bobby cut nearly a half billion dollars for research into mRNA vaccines, technology that could be used against certain cancers," Schlossberg wrote.
Schlossberg shared her heartbreaking fears that her young children may not remember her. She expressed feeling robbed of the opportunity to continue "the wonderful life" she built with her husband, George Moran. Despite her parents' and siblings' attempts to shield her from their grief, she acknowledges feeling their pain daily.
"For my whole life, I have tried to be good, to be a good student and a good sister and a good daughter, and to protect my mother and never make her upset or angry," she reflected. "Now I have added a new tragedy to her life, to our family's life, and there's nothing I can do to stop it."
