United States:
US lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent far right figure, declared on Friday she will be leaving her Congressional position, just one week after President Donald Trump withdrew his support for his once loyal ally.
In an online video statement, the 51-year-old Republican representative from Georgia who entered Congress in 2020 expressed that she had "always been despised in Washington DC and never fit in."
Greene stated she didn't want her supporters and family to experience "a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms."
"I will be resigning from office with my last day being January 5, 2026," she announced.
Greene had previously served as a standard-bearer of Trump's Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, but the president declared he was withdrawing all support for "'Wacky' Marjorie" on November 7.
Trump followed this with multiple posts on his Truth Social platform the next morning, criticizing Greene as a "lightweight" and even labeling her a "traitor" to the Republican Party.
The former key Trump ally subsequently reported being targeted by numerous threats.
Greene's unexpected decision represents the most evident indication of growing division within the MAGA movement, which is currently processing significant Democratic victories in this month's off-year elections, as well as Trump's friendly White House meeting earlier Friday with leftist mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.
The movement has been particularly divided over Trump's changing position regarding convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, whose network allegedly included various American elites.
"Standing up for American women who were raped at 14, trafficked and used by rich powerful men should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for," Greene declared.
