The former cricket star turned politician, aged 72, has remained imprisoned for more than 2 years on various charges
Imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan claimed on Friday that Pakistan's Army Chief General Asim Munir is subjecting both him and his wife to "mental torture" while in detention, attempting to force their submission.
The 72-year-old ex-cricketer has spent over two years behind bars facing multiple legal cases. Currently, he is confined in Adiala Jail located in Rawalpindi.
His spouse Bushra Bibi was also imprisoned after both were found guilty in the Al-Qadir Trust cases earlier this year.
"The mental torture being inflicted on me and Bushra Begum in prison is orchestrated by Asim Munir, with the singular aim of breaking our resolve to make us surrender," Khan declared in a statement posted on X.
"My message for Asim Munir is that... we will never bow down to the cruelty of Yazid or the tyranny of the Pharaoh as long as we live," he stated, referencing historical rulers notorious for their brutality and oppression.
"Gen Munir is utilizing the army to create a climate of lawlessness and fascism in our nation. Asim Munir has made every possible effort to extend his illegitimate authority for 10 years," Khan alleged.
Khan further asserted that since General Asim Munir assumed the position of Army Chief, he has been working to deteriorate relations with Afghanistan.
"After taking office, he first issued threats against Afghanistan, then expelled Afghan nationals who had resided here for three generations, followed by conducting drone strikes there, making deliberate attempts to provoke them into conflict with Pakistan, creating conditions favorable for terrorism." "He (Munir) is pursuing this strategy to present himself as a 'mujahid' (warrior) to Western factions opposed to Afghanistan's current leadership, hoping to convince them that he alone can wage the war against terrorism," he criticized.
"This oppression has caused Pakistan's economy to experience unprecedented slow growth with virtually zero foreign investment," he remarked, adding that "never in Pakistan's history has investment reached such low levels as it has now."
"National debt has doubled in three years. Every Pakistani citizen is now trapped in a debt quagmire. The country's economic challenges cannot be resolved until a government truly representing the people is established." He also urged his party supporters to focus on the upcoming Peshawar rally scheduled for September 27.
