Zohran Mamdani stated his team had reached out to the White House to arrange a meeting with Donald Trump.
New York:
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced on Thursday that while he has numerous disagreements with President Donald Trump, he intends to collaborate with the American leader on any agenda that would benefit New Yorkers.
Mamdani is scheduled to meet Trump at the White House on Friday, marking their first meeting since Mamdani's victory in the New York City Mayoral election on November 4.
"I have many disagreements with the President, but I believe we should be relentless in pursuing all avenues and meetings that can make our city more affordable for every single New Yorker," Mamdani explained to reporters.
"I plan to clearly communicate to President Trump that I will work with him on any agenda benefiting New Yorkers. However, if an agenda harms New Yorkers, I will be the first to voice opposition," he continued.
Mamdani explained that his team initiated contact with the White House to establish this meeting "because I am willing to work with anyone to improve affordability for the more than eight and a half million residents who call this city home." He noted that it is customary for incoming New York City Mayors to meet with the White House due to their "mutual reliance." This connection is particularly crucial now given the national affordability crisis, which deeply affects New Yorkers, and the specific challenges cities face in balancing public safety against federal administrative measures.
Mamdani acknowledged that for New Yorkers, his meeting with Trump "is between two very different candidates who they voted for the same reason. They wanted a leader who would address the cost of living crisis that makes it impossible for working people to afford living in this city."
In a post on Truth Social Wednesday night, Trump stated that the "communist" Mayor of New York City "Zohran 'Kwame' Mamdani, has asked for a meeting. We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st." Trump has previously criticized Mamdani's policies and warned before the November 4 election that Mamdani's victory would represent a "complete and total economic and social disaster" for New York City.
During his passionate victory speech, Mamdani had directly challenged Trump, who has implemented strict immigration policies in his second presidential term. Mamdani asserted that New York will continue to be strengthened by immigrants and, following his historic victory, would be "led by an immigrant".
"After all, if anyone can demonstrate to a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that produced him. And if there is any effective way to intimidate a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that enabled his accumulation of power," Mamdani declared to enthusiastic applause.
"This is not only how we stop Trump; it's how we prevent the next one. So, Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up," Mamdani proclaimed.
Trump described Mamdani's victory speech as a "very angry" address, suggesting that Mamdani was off to a poor start and would not succeed without showing respect toward Washington.
Mamdani secured victory in the closely-watched New York City Mayoral race, making history as the first South Asian and Muslim elected to lead America's largest city.
He had maintained frontrunner status in the NYC Mayoral election for months before defeating Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa and political heavyweight former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent candidate and received Trump's official endorsement just hours before the elections.
