Australia and Turkey both submitted bids in 2022 to host the annual COP.
Turkey is positioned to host next year's UN climate summit while Australia would lead the conference's negotiations between governments, according to a compromise agreement that is currently developing through discussions on Thursday, as confirmed by three sources familiar with the situation.
Both Australia and Turkey put forward their bids in 2022 to host the annual COP (Conference of the Parties), which serves as the world's principal forum for advancing climate action initiatives.
The two countries have been engaged in an extended contest for hosting rights, with neither willing to concede their position.
Under the compromise arrangement, Turkey would be granted the presidency of the summit while a pre-COP event would be organized in the Pacific region, according to the sources, who noted that the negotiations occurring at COP30 in Brazil have not yet been officially concluded.
Bloomberg was the first to report on this compromise solution.
When approached, a spokesperson for Australia's COP30 delegation declined to provide any comment. Representatives from both the Australian and Turkish governments did not immediately respond to requests for statements on the matter.
