President Donald Trump emphasized on Tuesday that the United States must establish a single federal standard for artificial intelligence regulation, warning that fragmented state-by-state approaches could hinder technological advancement.
"Overregulation by the States is threatening to undermine this Growth Engine," Trump declared on his social media platform, advocating for "one Federal Standard instead of a patchwork of 50 State Regulatory Regimes."
The president expressed concern that without unified federal oversight, China would "easily catch us in the AI race," highlighting his administration's commitment to maintaining American leadership in artificial intelligence development.
Since beginning his second term in January, Trump has made AI competitiveness a priority, directing his administration to develop an AI Action Plan aimed at establishing America as "the world capital in artificial intelligence" while reducing regulatory obstacles to innovation.
The rapid emergence of AI technologies has sparked numerous concerns, including potential disruption of democratic processes, increased fraudulent activities, and significant workforce displacement.
In his Tuesday statement, the Republican president called on lawmakers to either incorporate the proposed federal standard into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) or pass separate legislation addressing the matter.
"Put it in the NDAA, or pass a separate Bill, and nobody will ever be able to compete with America," Trump stated, though he did not provide specific details about the federal standard he envisions.
