Sundar Pichai has emphasized that artificial intelligence models are susceptible to making errors.
London:
The CEO of Alphabet, Sundar Pichai, has advised users against placing blind trust in artificial intelligence outputs, while simultaneously warning companies about a potential burst in the AI investment bubble that could affect everyone in the industry.
During his conversation with the BBC, the Indian-American executive who leads Google's parent company highlighted that AI systems frequently make mistakes and encouraged users to utilize them in conjunction with other information tools. Pichai stressed the importance of maintaining a diverse information ecosystem rather than depending exclusively on AI technology.
"This is why people also use Google search, and we have other products that are more grounded in providing accurate information," Pichai explained to the BBC.
He noted that while AI tools excel at creative writing tasks, users "have to learn to use these tools for what they're good at, and not blindly trust everything they say."
Google introduced an "AI Mode" featuring its Gemini chatbot into its search function in May, designed to simulate conversations with subject matter experts.
"We take pride in the amount of work we put in to give us as accurate information as possible, but the current state-of-the-art AI technology is prone to some errors," he acknowledged.
The tech leader further reflected that despite the "extraordinary moment" represented by growing AI investments, there exists some "irrationality" in the current AI boom. When questioned about Google's ability to withstand an AI bubble burst, Pichai admitted that even the tech giant would feel effects from such an event.
"I think no company is going to be immune, including us," he stated during his comprehensive interview at Google's Silicon Valley headquarters in California.
"We can look back at the internet right now. There was clearly a lot of excess investment, but none of us would question whether the internet was profound.
"I expect AI to be the same. So I think it's both rational and there are elements of irrationality through a moment like this," he added.
Pichai explained that Google's distinctive approach of owning its complete technology "full stack" – from semiconductor chips to YouTube data, models, and cutting-edge research – positioned the company better to navigate potential AI market volatility.
The technology corporation is also increasing its presence in the UK, pledging 5 billion pounds for infrastructure and research over the coming two years.
"We are committed to investing in the UK in a pretty significant way," Pichai confirmed.
