Mark Welsh, president of Texas A&M, is resigning Friday amid allegations of permitting "transgender indoctrination" at the institution.

The Texas A&M University president's departure comes during a period of conservative scrutiny on higher education under President Donald Trump's administration.

"President Welsh has served Texas A&M with honorable and selfless dedication," university chancellor Glenn Hegar stated, without elaborating on the specific reasons for the resignation.

"We mutually agree that this is an appropriate time for leadership transition and to position Texas A&M for future excellence," Hegar further commented.

Welsh's resignation follows the circulation of a viral video showing a "whistleblower" student confronting a professor about teaching "gender ideology" in a children's literature course.

In the secretly recorded footage, the student can be heard saying, "I question whether this teaching is legal because our president has stated there are only two genders."

"I'm uncomfortable promoting content that contradicts both presidential policy and my religious convictions," the unidentified student continues.

The professor responds that her teaching material is not illegal and advises, "if you feel uncomfortable in this class, you have the option to withdraw."

On his first day in office, President Trump issued an executive order stating "The United States policy recognizes two sexes, male and female."

The video gained widespread attention after Texas state legislator Brian Harrison shared it online, describing it as "transgender indoctrination" and calling on Governor Greg Abbott to terminate both the professor and Welsh.

Harrison also released an audio recording where the student approaches Welsh requesting the professor's dismissal.

"That's not happening," Welsh initially responds, though he subsequently did terminate the professor.

Welsh, who previously served as a four-star general in the US Air Force, began his leadership at Texas A&M in 2023.
