Trump Says He Is Speaking With Taliban To Regain Control Of Bagram Airfield

U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that he is engaging in discussions with Afghanistan regarding the potential recovery of the Bagram air base.

"We should have never given it up," Trump remarked to journalists while in the Oval Office.

These statements follow Trump's declaration during a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer the previous day, where he indicated the United States' intention to regain control of the strategic base that American forces utilized following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

The American military withdrawal in 2021 resulted in the Islamist Taliban movement taking control of the facility.

Afghan officials have voiced opposition to any renewed American military presence in the country.

"Afghanistan and the United States need to engage with one another ... without the United States maintaining any military presence in any part of Afghanistan," stated Zakir Jalal, an Afghan foreign ministry official, in a social media post on X on Thursday.
